Personal Training Schools

People are increasingly concerned about living long, healthy lives and are spending more time and money on fitness than ever before. This rise has caused employment opportunities for personal trainers to grow rapidly. Now is your chance to meet the demand by getting the training you need through a personal training school!

Personal trainers usually work one-on-one with clients, helping them assess their level of physical fitness and set and reach fitness goals. They also demonstrate various exercises and help clients improve their exercise techniques. Fitness workers lead, instruct and motivate individuals or groups in exercise activities, such as cardiovascular exercise, strength training and stretching.

Career Opportunities

Personal trainers can be found in health clubs, country clubs, cruise ships, hospitals, universities, yoga and Pilates studios, resorts, and even clients’ homes. Many group fitness and personal training jobs are part-time, but workers often increase their hours by working at several different facilities or at clients’ homes. The hours are flexible and usually include some night or weekend work. Personal trainers try to meet both their clients’ needs and schedules.

Salary Range

According to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Outlook Handbook (BLS), the median annual earnings of personal trainers and group exercise instructors were $31,720 in 2012, up from $25,470 in 2004. The bottom 10 percent earned less than $17,360 in 2012 (up from $14,530 in 2004), while the top 10 percent earned $66,530 in 2012 compared to 2004's $55,560.

As a personal trainer’s client base grows, the career offers good pay combined with flexible hours. Most personal trainers get the unusual benefit of the use of fitness facilities at no cost. However, because many work part-time, they often do not receive benefits such as health insurance or retirement plans from their employers.

Personal Training Schools and Degrees

Beginning a career in personal training requires solid career education to learn the fundamentals of health and fitness. Personal trainers are usually required to obtain certification in personal training, weight training or aerobics instruction. While some personal trainers obtain Bachelor’s degrees in exercise science, physical education or a related field, the majority receive their training from personal training schools, career colleges or fitness institutes.
